Outline of casino management board revealed

The government has provided the first outline of the size and scope of the Casino Management Board, the main mission of which is to be the regulator of the legalized Japanese casino industry.

As had been decided under the terms of the IR Implementation Act, the Casino Management Board will be an independent agency under the auspices of the Cabinet Office. Newly revealed is that it will have a staff of about 95 employees and will be launched on July 1, 2019. It is also being provided a budget of 6 billion yen (about US$54 million)—at least according to the Cabinet Office budget request.

It remains to be seen whether the Casino Management Board intends to regulate the three casinos in a direct, hands-on manner, or if other mediating organizations will be employed.

The official English-language name of the Casino Management Board also remains to be decided.
