Pachinko majors launch consortium to support Paris Agreement goals

Three major pachinko parlor operators—Dynam, Maruhan, and Under Tree—have launched a consortium together with the Tokyo Electric Power Company to reduce energy consumption and to contribute toward the climate goals outlined in the Paris Agreement.

Dynam currently operates 405 pachinko parlors, Maruhan 319 parlors, and Under Tree 137 parlors.

A major activity will be to hold study meetings within the consortium to discuss means of making more efficient use of energy and sharing ideas on the subject. The aim is to bring their companies in line with Japan’s national goals for the reduction of greenhouse gases.

With their bright lights and relatively high energy usage, pachinko parlors are sometimes criticized for their extravagant energy consumption. These companies are responding to those public concerns.
