Package tour visitors down 2 pct year-on-year in Oct

Package tour visitors fell 2.0 percent year-on-year in the month of October, reaching 784,000, according to data from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

This was led mainly by a drop in visitors from Mainland China and Hong Kong, which fell 6.8 percent and 11.4 percent year-on-year, respectively - to a combined total of 626,000.

On the other hand, those from Korea (52,000), and Taiwan (62,000) grew by 38.4 percent and 50.1 percent respectively.

The numbers meant that package tour visitor numbers grew to 7.3 million in the first ten months of 2018, a year-on-year increase of 7.1 percent.

Macau gaming revenues fell below analysts expectations in October, impacted by China’s continued weakness in its macro environment, as well as a visit from President Xi Jinping’s trip to the region.

Analysts last month also noted the dates of this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival and Golden Week may have encouraged holidayers to travel to further flung destinations such as the US and Europe to take advantage of the extended holiday period.
