Pagcor defends right to issue online licenses

State-run Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) has reiterated its authority in granting offshore gaming licenses in the country, reports The Standard.

“Pagcor stands by its ground that it has been carrying out its mandate within the bounds of its charter to “operate, authorize and license games of chance, games of cards and games of numbers in the Philippines,” said the regulator in a statement.

Earlier this week, Philippines senator Francis Escudero questioned Pagcor’s authority over online gambling, noting there is no clear policy on who is regulating online gambling in the country.

“We need to address this issue so we can finally plug the loopholes in foregone revenues from offshore gaming and put to rest the issue of the legality or illegality of its operation in the country” said Escudero.

“We understand that there is a pending case filed before the Supreme Court concerning the matter at hand. The state-run gaming agency shall await and abide by the High Court’s decision on this,” Pagcor said.
