PAGCOR’s Domingo: a quarter of all POGO workers are Filipinos

In an effort to stave off the perception that the POGO industry serves only the benefit of the Chinese, PAGCOR chief Andrea Domingo has insisted that about a quarter of all people working at these companies are, in fact, Filipinos.

“While POGOs cater to foreign customers and employ foreign customer service representatives who could effectively address their concerns, other areas such as information technology support, live studio, and gaming platform providers employ local workers,” she said.

She noted that, according to PAGCOR’s figure, there are currently 30,520 Filipino employees working at POGOs.

“This number does not include employees in the ancillary industries such as real estate, transportation, and retail,” she added.

PAGCOR data contends that POGOs employ over 120,000 workers, of which about 70,000 are Chinese nationals.

The PAGCOR data suggests that there are also 3,000 Vietnamese, 2,400 Indonesians, 1,700 Taiwanese, and 1,200 Malaysians, along with workers from 44 additional countries.

Domingo also explained that from 2016 to 2019, PAGCOR income from POGOs amounted to PHP18 billion (US$360 million).
