Police suspect foul play in Grand Lisboa Palace fire

Authorities suspect foul play in a fire that broke out at the construction site of SJM Holding’s new casino on Cotai, the Grand Lisboa Palace, local media reports.

The fire broke out on Friday evening at a storage facility for paint and other construction materials and took two hours to bring under control.

A total of 522 people were evacuated from the construction site and no one was reported injured, TDM said.

The case has been passed on to the Judiciary Police for further investigation.

It is unclear as to the extent of the damage at the site and whether it will have any impact on the opening of the resort, which is scheduled for the first half of next year.

The Grand Lisboa Palace will feature a total of approximately 2,000 hotel rooms and suites, facilities for meetings and conferences, shopping, dining and entertainment, and a casino, whose original plans were for 700 gaming tables and over 1,200 slot machines across a gaming floor area of approximately 27,000 square metres. SJM says more than 90 percent of the resort will be dedicated to non-gaming.
