Poll results support nation-wide greyhound racing ban

Over 82 percent of people in a recent Facebook poll voted in favor of an Australia-wide ban on greyhound racing.

Run by ABC’s Lateline, nearly 22,000 people participated in the poll which asked whether Australia should impose a federal-ban on the sport.

The questionnaire comes on the back of a recent special inquiry which found “overwhelming” evidence of animal cruelty in the state’s greyhound industry.

Earlier this month, the NSW government became the first Australian state to announce a ban on greyhound racing. The shocking news was followed later in the day by a similar announcement from ACT, Australia’s capital state - for similar reasonings.

NSW Premier Mike Baird said the "widespread and systemic mistreatment of animals" would not be tolerated and that the government was left with "no acceptable course of action except to close this industry down.”

According to Baird, the inquiry found evidence of mass killings of greyhounds, live baiting and mistreatment of greyhounds, with little or no capability of the industry to reform over the short or medium term.

Australia is one of only eight countries in the world where commercial greyhound racing is still legal.
