Privatization of the Osaka Subway another step toward IR

As of April, the city-operated Osaka Municipal Subway will be privatized and continue its operations under the new name Osaka Metro.

This is a step towards the realization of an IR and the 2025 World Expo, both of which the authorities in Osaka hope to see placed upon Yumeshima island.

Transportation to and from Yumeshima remains one of the largest challenges for building an IR at this location, and it is envisioned that the Osaka Metro’s Chuo Line will be extended to Yumeshima from its current terminus at Cosmo Square Station on neighboring Sakishima island.

Privatization is intended to strengthen the Osaka Metro’s financial stability before the substantial IR investment is taken on.

The inaugural president of the Osaka Metro will be Hideaki Kawai, 63, who spent his career as an executive of Panasonic.
