Public consultation begins for croupier ban proposal

Macau’s gaming regulator has proposed new measures that will see casino croupiers, pit managers, tellers, dealers and other frontline casino staff banned from casinos when off-duty.

Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau director Paulo Martins Chan reportedly presented the proposal at a press conference on Tuesday.

“We found out that the current law has flaws and we also think that now is the right time to proceed with a revision [of the law approved in 2012],” said Chan, quoted by Macau Daily Times.

As well as access restrictions for frontline casino employees, Chan also announced there will be new prohibitions for people under 21 years of age into casinos, and also announced there would be a more streamlined process to punish offenders.

The proposal will enter into a public consultation period for 30 days (until October 26), with three public sessions to be held during the period.

Chan said he expects the proposal to be delivered to the Legislative Assembly (AL) by the beginning of 2018.

Chan however noted that “the time that will be needed for its discussion and approval within the AL is out of our control,” but, “we hope that can be as short as possible.”
