Regulators to keep close watch on Alipay in Macau

Local regulators will closely monitor the transactions made through the Chinese payment service Alipay to ensure legal money inflow, says Secretary for Economy and Finance, Lionel Leong.

Since the partnership was reached with the Macau Pass in July, concerns had emerged over Alipay’s expansion into casinos. However, Union Gaming analyst Grant Govertsen in his estimates ruled out the possibility of casinos’ involvement in the third-party payment service.

Last week, China UnionPay, rolled out a nationwide campaign to clamp down on the rampant abuse of its payment system.
