Ruling party receives IR experts committee report

On Wednesday the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s project team on IRs officially received the 130-page report of the Experts Committee advising the government on the terms of the IR Implementation Bill.

Afterwards, the ruling party chairman for the project team, Takeshi Iwaya, briefed reporters on his reactions.

While some in the international media found the report to be vague, Iwaya appeared to be pleased with this aspect of the report: “After we have held our hearings and received the results of the public comments, then finally, in a positive sense, we will need to make our political judgments.”

Iwaya noted that while international operators are mostly interested in the IRs that could be located in the major cities, from the Japanese national perspective facilities that promote regional development cannot be neglected.

Representative Iwaya explained that, in consideration of all the tasks that remained ahead, that the IR Implementation Bill should be passed into the law “in the next Diet”—probably referring to the late spring or early summer of 2018.
