Rummy for stakes considered gambling in Kerala

The Kerala High Court has maintained the ruling that playing rummy for stakes is considered gambling and thus an offense under the Kerala Gaming Act 1960, local media reports.

The ruling was made by a Division Bench of Justices P R Ramachandra Menon and N Anilkumar, and is in response to a petition filed by a club in Kerala which had claimed harassment by the police who had visited the club and booked players on a number of occasions.

While the court admits that rummy is indeed a game of skill, it also held that playing it with stakes for money would amount to gambling.

The ruling has been considered a huge blow to online rummy and skill gaming in India.
