Sabah police bust Chinese illegal online gambling syndicate

Police in Sabah, Malaysia, have arrested 23 Chinese nationals which they say were operating an illegal online gambling syndicate out of three apartments being used as call centers.

Police seized 25 laptops, 55 mobile phones, and other equipment.

“When we stormed the apartments, some of them were busy entertaining requests for bets using laptops and mobile phones,” State Deputy Police Chief Zaini Jass told the local media.

Jass also noted that the syndicate was “targeting countrymen back in China.”

In October, there was a larger bust of about 80 Chinese in Malaysia, which the authorities said related to an online scam, but it was not clarified whether or not that too related to gambling activities.
