Sands team graduates from Unique Diploma Programme at UM

Sands China and the University of Macau on Tuesday honoured the third group of graduates for completing the one-year Diploma Programme in Business Management, with a graduation ceremony at the university.

“One of the best ways we can invest in our company and in Macao is to invest in our team members,” said Antonio Ramirez, senior vice president of human resources for Sands China Ltd. “This unique diploma programme helps Sands China’s local team members grow academically, professionally and personally. As a result, they become stronger as team members and as industry professionals, and can further contribute to Macao’s development as a world centre of tourism and leisure.”

The 44 graduates represent various gaming and non-gaming departments at Sands China, including table games, facilities, food and beverage, market development, surveillance, and others. Tailor-made for Sands China team members, the practical programme can be adjusted as needed to better fit its students. For example, some of the coursework in the 2017/18 academic year has been adjusted to better match team members’ learning and practical needs.

Sands China is the first company to have worked with the University of Macau to develop a one-year diploma programme. Since its launch in the 2014/15 academic year, over 140 team members have earned diplomas. In order to graduate, students are required to complete eight courses, comprising a total of more than 330 hours of coursework. To support team members’ in the programme, Sands China provides each student with MOP10,000 (US$1,240) in sponsorship for their course fees, and asks departments to arrange work rosters according to team members’ class schedules.

Committed to developing a well-trained workforce, Sands China offers a variety of horizontal and vertical mobility opportunities to its team members through internal promotions and integrated resort career development programmes.
