SJM launches Macau Gaming History Gallery

SJM Holdings has inaugurated a gallery designed to showcase the long history of gaming in Macau, as well as to promote responsible gambling.

The Macau Gaming History Gallery is located in Lisboa-Crystal Palace and is curated by SJM. It exhibits a wealth of information and historical equipment from Macau’s gaming history, such as 70s-era slot machines, manual dice shakers, old-fashioned card shoes and wooden card handlers, storage boxes of Keno lottery balls and Sap I Chi, historic discard holders and tombola cages.

It also introduces now defunct games such as Chinese-style lottery. Visitors can enjoy a flutter on simulated gaming tables, or pose as a dealer.

Additionally, the Gallery details the architectural design features of Casino and Hotel Lisboa and its extensive artwork collection.

Gaming in Macau dates back to as early as the 16th century, while Stanley Ho’s Sociedade de Turismo e Diversoes held the casino monopoly from 1962 until the further licenses were granted in 2002.

“To deepen people’s understanding of the development of Macau gaming industry and to conserve related historical information, artefacts and oral tradition, SJM has established the Macau Gaming History Gallery with hopes that it may provide a lasting monument to an important part of Macau’s history, preserving the path of local gaming development,” SJM managing director and chief operating officer Angela Leong said at the opening ceremony.

The announcement of the lookback at Macau’s past comes just one month after Asia Gaming Brief launched its own trip down memory lane, celebrating the people who have built and shaped the industry through the Asia Gaming Genealogy Tree dinner.

Leading figures from gaming in Asia gathered at a reunion party during G2E Asia to launch the initiative, which will be an annual event, growing in tandem with the industry.
