SkyCity workers strike for second weekend in a row

Workers at SkyCity Casino in New Zealand organized a weekend-long strike for the second week in a row, attempting to improve their weekend and night-time pay rates, local media reports.

Unite union’s national secretary, Gerard Hehir said the workers were seeking better pay rates for weekend and night work, but negotiations have made no progress so far.

Union members have voted to strike from 10 pm on Saturday night until 8 am Monday morning. 

There are around 2000 employees at Skycity, and around 900 union members, most of which are front of house staff. 

"We've had about 50 to 60 new members in the past week which is a really good sign - people who actually weren't previously part of the union have been signing up saying 'yup, we want what you're fighting for and we're keen to help,” said Hahir. 

Hahir noted that SkyCity Adelaide had weekend and night rates at its Australian casino, and should do the same in New Zealand.
