Slight increase in gambling expenditure in New Zealand

New Zealand gamblers spent nearly NZ$2.1 billion (US$1.38 billion) in 2015, an increase of NZ$25.5 million, or 1.2 percent according to latest statistics from the New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs.

It was reported that New Zealanders spend more on the country’s casinos, non-casino pokies, racing and sports, but less on lottery, which fell 9.2 percent to NZ$420 million in 2015.

The net take from non-casino gaming machines increased by 1.5 percent from NZ$806 million in 2014 to NZ$818 million in 2015.  The increased expenditure was despite a decline in the number of venues and machines.

The net take from the country’s casinos increased 8.5 per cent from NZ$486 million in 2014 to NZ$527 million in 2015.  This increase followed a period of significant capital investment by the casino and hotel operator SkyCity the operator of New Zealand’s largest casino.

Expenditure on gaming is defined as the gross amount wagered by gamblers, less the amount paid out in prizes or dividends. The official statistics collated by the Department of Internal Affairs measures the amount lost or spent by players, and includes the gross profit of the gambling operator.
