State cricket bodies hush on betting legalization talks

A number of India’s state cricket associations have stayed silent after being requested to give their views on the legalization of betting, local media reports.

Sanjay Singh, member secretary, Law Commission of India, reportedly wrote to the BCCI and state associations in July seeking their opinion on the legalization of betting in India.

“The recommendation made by the Commission that betting should be legalized by law involves the enactment of a law, which is a matter that may be examined by the Law Commission and the Government for such action as it may consider necessary in the facts and circumstances of the case,” the letter read.

“I would, therefore, request you to forward the views of your association on the matter to the Commission at the earliest, as we would like to submit our report in line with the directions of the Supreme Court, at an early date,” it added.

However, so far, only the Saurashtra Cricket Association has replied to the letter, expressing their reservations to the proposal.

Some state associations, including Mumbai, Himachal Pradesh, Orissa and Tripura, claimed that they had not received any letter from the Law Commission, while others, including Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Andhra are set to hold meetings to discuss the matter.

Officials from Hyderabad and Baroda associations said they will not reply to the letter.
