State governments eye crackdown on lottery betting

Online lottery betting may soon be outlawed in several Australian states, as gambling regulators come under increasing pressure to crack down on the lucrative business model, local media reports.

Online lottery betting has been gathering momentum in Australia, with Gibraltar-based Lottoland seeing a lot of success in the market.

Last week, CrownBet announced it would be entering the online lottery betting market with the introduction of CrownLotto.

However, it is understood that the West Australian, Queensland and Victoria government is currently looking on ways to clamp down on the online lottery betting industry.

The chief executive of Australian Lottery and Newsagents Association, Adam Joy, said that many Australians are “very confused” about the betting model, and think they are entering a lottery.

“We have had positive engagement from both federal and state governments about the impacts of lotto betting on small businesses and their communities,” Joy said, quoted by Herald Sun.

However, Lottoland Australia chief executive Luke Brill said the campaign led by the newsagents and Tatts Group was “monopolistic behaviour”.

Brill said the company spent a great deal of effort to inform customers they were not entering a traditional lottery.
