Thai NRC members call for casino legalization

A group of members of Thailand’s National Reform Council has called for casinos to be legalized to boost tourism and tax revenue, saying the beach resort of Pattaya is the most logical location, The Nation newspaper reported.

The newspaper cited Major Arnun Watcharothai and Kriangkrai Phumlaochaeng as saying the casino-revival plan was backed by a dozen NRC members, including themselves.

Previous proposals to open up the Kingdom to casino gambling have failed amid strong local opposition from conservative members of society.

The council members said a formal proposal would be submitted soon to the government.

Arnun told the Nation the group was aware of the previous unsuccessful attempts to seek government permits for such complexes but believed that there would be significant economic spin-offs from this new proposal.
