Tour groups to Macau to resume this Saturday

The MGTO had earlier requested local travel agencies to suspend tour groups to Macau from August 25 until August 30 in order to facilitate resource allocation for the city’s recovery.

During a Tuesday meeting with representatives from travel agency and hotel industry associations, the MGTO learned that most of the hotels and guest houses already have their water and power supply resumed, while the other services concerned are being restored progressively.

“Considering the conditions of roads around the city, conditions for hospitality and the image of the city, as well as the factor of moderate visitor arrivals after the summer holiday, MGTO has discussed and reached a consensus with the trade to resume arrangements of tour groups to Macao starting from 2 September, in the hope that more time will be given for the city’s recovery, while members of the trade can take the chance to restore both their facilities and services,” wrote MGTO in a government announcement.

MGTO says it will inform the China National Tourism Administration and its counterparts in Shenzhen and Hong Kong of the resumption.

In June, Macau recorded an 18.1 percent increase in package tourists for the month, amounting to 669,600 tourists in the month, according to data from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

Visitors on package tours from South Korea saw the largest increase, going up 30.7 percent year-on-year to 39,500, while tourists from mainland China increased 15.8 percent to 509,800.

The results brought a total of 3.8 million package tourists for the half year ended June 30, 2017, up 10.3 percent compared to the prior-year period.
