Travel agencies oppose govt plan for Beijing Imperial Palace land

A group of 20 travel agencies has asked the government to halt plans regarding the land plot of the former Beijing Imperial Palace Hotel, at least until their pending lawsuits are settled, local media reports. 

The hotel shut its doors in 2017, leaving a number of tour agencies, who had preordered 70,000 rooms, short of around MOP100 million. 

Wong Fai, the group’s representative, said that no solution has been offered to the tour agencies since the hotel’s closure. In 2017, the group filed two lawsuits against the relevant land plot and property. 

The lawsuits are ongoing and trials are expected within the year. Wong believes that until the lawsuits are settled, the government should not make any plans for the land. 

The group has since handed a letter to the Land, Public Works and Transport Bureau (DSSOPT) to oppose its plan for the land plot. 

“The amount of debt is tremendous, which gives reason to the victims to worry about the owners’ capability of paying it back. That causes instability over the land’s future development,” said Wong, quoted by Macau Daily Times. “Thus, we believe it is unsuitable to make plans for the land plot.”
