Unibet launches its own live-betting system in Australia

Foreign online bookmaker Unibet has launched its own “click-to-call” in-play betting system in Australia, joining the likes of William Hill, Ladbrokes and Bet365, local media reports.

The system allows punters to use their mobile and desktops to place live bets on sports at the click of a button, which is confirmed via an automated phone call.

Australian laws currently only allow live betting on sports through a live phone call, but the “click-to-call” system is a grey area.

According to The Australian, in the Unibet 2014 annual report, the operator appeared to acknowledge that in-play betting was illegal in Australia. “Unibet offers sports betting and horseracing products to the Australian market, where live betting, casino and poker are still banned.”

Last month, Australian Human Services Minister Alan Tudge made plans to introduce an interim ban on in-play betting, effectively closing the “click-to-call” loophole.

A final decision on in-play betting will be made after the next federal election, local media reports.
