Vietnam police make second major gambling bust in a month

Vietnamese police have broken up an illegal online gambling operation in Hanoi that has taken in about $2.77 billion in business, VN Express reports.

A total of 16 people were arrested in the raid, which is the second major bust in May.

Gamblers were playing on an online slot game. To access the game, they either downloaded the app onto their phones, or registered directly on a web browser. They needed to deposit cash through a network of agencies to get virtual points for gambling. The points could be encashed at the end of the game, the newspaper said.

The operation is thought to have been operating since 2018.

In early May, police busted a ring worth $858 million operating out of Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. It was offering online poker and unauthorized lottery.
