Visitor arrivals up 4.9 percent year-on-year in June


Visitor arrivals in Macau totalled 2.4 million in June 2016, up 4.9 percent year-on-year, according to the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

As with trends in May, the month saw an increase in overnight visitors - up 13.9 percent year-on-year. Visitors from Mainland China also saw an increase in June, up 5.7 percent compared to the same month in 2015.

In May, total visitor arrivals in Macau dropped 2.8 percent year-on-year to 2.5 million. Whilst there was a drop in arrivals, the statistics showed that visitors were staying longer, with the number of overnight visitors increasing by 3.8 percent year on year and average length of stay rising by 0.1 day to 1.2 days.

A recent report from the Tourism Research Centre of the Institute for Tourism Studies revealed that shopping was the most common reason for tourists visiting Macau.

In its Macau Tourist Satisfaction Index 1st Quarter Report, the institute has revealed that the primary reason for visitation of Macau was shopping, which accounted for 25.9 percent of respondents.

This was followed closely by cuisine and visiting World Heritage attractions, at 25.3 and 18.4 percent respectively.

Gambling came fourth in the index, accounting for only 10 percent of respondents.
