Visitors choose shopping in Macau over gambling


Shopping is the most common reason for those visiting Macau, according to the latest report from the Tourism Research Centre of the Institute for Tourism Studies released on Friday.

In its Macau Tourist Satisfaction Index 1st Quarter Report, the institute has revealed that the primary reason for visitation of Macau was shopping, which accounted for 25.9 percent of respondents.

This was followed closely by cuisine and visiting World Heritage attractions, at 25.3 and 18.4 percent respectively.

Gambling came fourth in the index, accounting for only 10 percent of respondents.

The report also revealed that overall tourism satisfaction level in the 16Q1 stood at 69.6 points out of 100, a slight improvement from 15Q4, which stood at 67.8.

Events scored the highest in terms of tourist satisfaction registering at 78.9 points in the quarter, and casino gaming came third at 74.2 points, up 4 points from 15Q4.

The index was created to measure visitors’ satisfaction based on ten tourism-related experiences, which include: casinos; events; heritage attractions; hotels; immigration services; non-heritage attractions; restaurants; retail shops; tour guides/operators; and transportation services.
