Wally Sombero to face charges over bribery scandal

Wally Sombero, the alleged middleman of casino tycoon Jack Lam has surrendered to the Philippine National Police (PNP) for his involvement in a bribery-corruption case connected to the Bureau of immigration.

Former Chief Superintendent Wally Sombero turned himself in to authorities on Wednesday morning, accused of facilitating a P50 million bribe in November 2016 for the release of 1,300 of Lam’s employees who had overstayed their visas.

Last February, Sombero denied involvement in the bribery scandal and having any personal connection to Lam.

For me there's no bribery. I did not offer anything,” Sombero said. "I have never been involved in any wrongdoing.”

"If anybody can prove that I am a middleman or I know Jack Lam, I don't need a hearing anymore, I will go straight to prison, to Muntinlupa right away" Sombero told reporters.

Sombero now faces plunder charges for the bribery of two former deputy immigration commissioners Al Argosino and Michael Robles, who were arrested on Tuesday and face similar charges.
