Watchdog urges govt to tackle problem gambling

South Korea’s state auditor has urged the government to roll out tighter plans to prevent gambling addiction, local media reports.

According to a study conducted by the Board of Audit and Inspection (BAI), a large number of addicts are being observed at Kangwon Land, the nation’s only casino that is open to locals.

The survey revealed that more than 2,000 South Koreans visiting the resort for more than 100 days in a one-year period as of March.

While the casino operator considers those visiting that many number of times as a “compulsive” group of clients, the state auditor says that they have failed to roll out preemptive efforts to stop addiction.

The watchdog added that South Korean regulations are excessively loose compared to other countries, adding that Singapore limits locals' visit to casinos to six times a month.
