Yakuza boss arrested over illegal internet casino funds

A 67-year-old yakuza boss named Chikao Takabayashi was arrested on Tuesday on charges of receiving funds from an illegal internet casino based in the Omiya Ward of Saitama Prefecture.

Police busted the illicit internet casino in May, finding that it was drawing about JPY1 million (about USD9,000) in daily income from internet baccarat games.

Further investigations led them to Takabayashi, a yakuza boss of the Sumiyoshi-kai, whom police accuse of taking regular payments from the casino shop. The police believe that this arrangement had continued for about three years before the bust.

Takabayashi has denied the charges, saying that he “does not remember” receiving any illicit casino funds.
