Zhang reiterates Beijing’s support for diversification

China’s third highest ranking official Zhang Dejiang has re-emphasized the importance of Macau’s diversifying economy, adding the gaming hub has made “brilliant achievements” since the handover in 1999, local media reports.

Speaking on the tarmac alongside Macau’s chief executive Fernando Chui, Zhang noted that Macau “faces an important stage as it makes a transition in its development.”

“The central government firmly supports the economic and social development of Macau,” he said.

Zhang is set to spend the next three days in the gaming enclave, and was scheduled to hear a work report by the Macau government on Monday afternoon, is set to meet lawmakers at the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, and will wrap up his trip on Wednesday morning, according to SCMP.

“I am here to experience the development and achievements of Macau and the joy of its citizens. Macau’s economic development has gone through an enormous change since its handover. The livelihood of the people has seen obvious improvement with booming opportunities everywhere,” said Zhang.
