Art fan seeks to challenge casino monopoly in Tasmania

Australian millionaire David Walsh, who made his fortune through complex gambling systems, is looking to invest in a high roller casino for tourists only in Tasmania, local media reports.

The resort would be aimed at "super wealthy art lovers" who enjoy gambling.

Walsh from Tasmania, says the casino is not designed to compete with the Federal Group's Wrest Point Casino in the state capital of Hobart.

But he admitted he was not optimistic of breaking the Federal Group's "controversial monopoly" on all gambling operations in Tasmania.

"I think it is a bit of a long shot, but it would be nice, it's a good name," he told local media of his plans to dub the casino Monaco.  "It requires some good will from Wrest Point, it requires some significant impetus from the State government," he said.
