Bangladesh Supreme Court grants gambling clubs reprieve

Bangladesh’s Supreme Court has granted a reprieve to some of the country’s top clubs, which are offering games of skill for money, until the High Court can rule on the issue.

According to Glaws.com, clubs in Bangladesh have been offering various games for stakes using a loophole that gambling is illegal only when it is offered in places where public have access and is not illegal when played only among members.

Two lawyers questioned the legality in the High Court, which subsequently ordered the government to stop gambling in the clubs, which include institutions such as the Dhaka Club and the Ladies’ Club Dhaka. The case was subsequently taken up by the Supreme Court, which stayed the ruling for eight weeks and urged the High Court bench to expeditiously review the case.
