Chef in Macau IR being investigated for corruption linked to employment contracts

Macau authorities are investigating a corruption case involving an executive chef from a gaming concessionaire's restaurant, who allegedly received MOP240,000 ($29,870) from his subordinates over almost three years in exchange for help in receiving or renewing employment contracts.

According to a statement from the Macau Commission Against Corruption (CCAC), the investigation came from the company itself, according to which a chef in its catering department had demanded “monthly fees” in return for recommending the admission of workers and renewing their employment contracts.
The CCAC has received a report from a representative of a company fully owned by an undisclosed gaming concessionaire, alleging that the executive chef of the company’s food and beverage department had been soliciting bribes from employees for several years, violating both the law and the company's internal code of conduct.
Following a thorough investigation by the CCAC, it was discovered that the executive chef wielded significant power over recruitment, dismissal, and promotion within the department.
Exploiting this authority, he regularly demanded "respect" from his subordinates in the form of monthly "fees."
Between September 2020 and February 2023, he solicited these kickbacks, amounting to MOP240,000 ($29,870), in exchange for recommending workers for employment and contract renewals.
The executive chef has since been dismissed from his position. He is now accused of passive bribery in the private sector under the law for the Prevention and Suppression of Bribery in the Private Sector. The case has been forwarded to the Public Prosecutions Office for follow-up.
