Chinese tourists down 30-40 percent over long weekend

Only 30 percent of Macau’s hotel rooms have been booked by tourists from Mainland China over the three day long weekend from April 30 to May 2, local media reports.

Chan Chi Kit, President of the Macau Hoteliers and Innkeepers Association said the number of bookings from Chinese tourists represented a 30 to 40 percent fall compared to last year.

The results were not a surprise to Chan, who said the supply of hotel rooms in Macau already exceeded demand, with even more openings on the way. As a result, hoteliers have been offering more discounted packages to attract guests, said Chan. Promotion advertising had also increased compared to two years ago, he added.

Last week, the MGTO reported Macau’s 4-star hotel room rates dropped 18.1 percent year on year in March, to MOP 711.1 (US$89) per night, even lower than the average room rate of 3-star hotels.

Chan said the room rates hit their lowest this year, where average hotel price is around MOP600, compared to MOP1,200 (US$150) last year.

The hotel association president said he expects rates to increase a little ahead of the May 1 holiday, with a maximum increase of 50 percent.
