Chui re-elected as Macau leader

Fernando Chui has been re-elected as chief executive of Macau for a second term by a select panel of 400 largely pro-China loyalists, media reports.The result was widely expected as Chui was the sole candidate.Police in the gambling hub earlier stifled attempts to call for a greater say in the political process, quashing an attempt to hold an unofficial referendum on democracy.The informal survey sought to ask whether residents have confidence in Chui and whether they support universal suffrage. Police shut down polling booths last Monday, however about 9,000 have voted in the unofficial poll, the reports said.Chui has pledged to reform Macau’s law on migrant labor and consider moves to make the territory’s six casino operators responsible for the cost of their accommodation and transport.
