Diverted lottery ticket allotment sparks protests in Kerala, India

Two lottery agents staged a protest and threatened to commit suicide in India’s Kerala state over alleged irregularities in the lottery system.

The protesters, who were members of the Kerala Lottery Agents Association (KLAA), alleged irregularities in the allotment of lottery tickets and claimed that district lottery officer, Santosh Kumar Zen, was diverting lottery tickets to big dealers and curtailing the quota allotted to small agents.

The protesters were arrested by the police and later released on bail. The Vigilance Department had conducted a preliminary investigation of the Ernakulam lottery officers, following multiple complaints against them previously.

Kerala is one of the nine states in India that conducts lottery draws. However, while all other states run lottery schemes through official distributors, the Kerala government conducts lotteries through its own administrative machinery.
