E-sports revenue will generate global revenues of $500 million, up 25 percent from $400 million in 2015, however, the industry will only be able to see a fraction of revenues that is seen in major sports for years to come, says Deloitte in a report.
Over 150 million viewers watch professional players compete in video game tournaments each year, says the report - more than that of basketball in the US. However, revenues are far from that of major league sports, which ranges from $4 billion to $30 billion.
The high viewership means that tech and media companies will pay attention to esports, Deloitte says. “Because it appeals to a narrow and desirable demographic: 75 percent are millennials aged 18-34, 82 percent are men.”
