Gambling declines in importance as main reason to visit Macau

The number of visitors who cite gambling as their primary reason to visit Macau continues to slide, hitting 9.4 percent at the end of the second quarter, from 11.7 percent in 2010, according to IFT Tourism Research Center figures. Shopping tops the list as the primary attraction, with 26.8 percent of arrivals saying that was the main reason for visiting the territory. That’s up from 18.2 percent at the end of the second quarter in 2010. Cuisine is given as the second most popular reason for visiting, followed by cultural attractions and visiting friends and relatives. Gambling comes in fifth.
