Gaming tax revenue up 12.4 pct in first 5 months

Direct taxes from gaming in Macau increased 12.4 percent year-on-year in the January to May period, according to data from the Financial Services Bureau on Friday.

A total of MOP37.1 billion (US$4.6 billion) in revenue was collected in direct taxes from gaming in the period, compared to MOP33 billion recorded in the same period in 2016.

In May, gross gambling revenue jumped 23.7 percent year-on-year to MOP22.7 billion according to figures from the DICJ.

The strong gain came despite a visit to the territory by China's No. 3 politician, the Chairman of the National People's Congress, Zhang Dejiang, which had been expected to curtail growth.

The results in the month brought Macau’s GGR year-to-date to MOP106.4 billion, up 15.8 percent year-on-year compared to the prior-year period.
