Govt says no to lower GST rate on lottery businesses

India’s central government has turned down demands to reduce the Goods and Services Tax imposed on private lottery distributors.

Under the new GST rules, implemented July 1, lotteries that are distributed to other states by private players attract a 28 percent GST rate, while GST for lotteries run by state governments is only 12 percent.

The increased GST rate is said to have adversely impacted the lottery business across a number of states, including Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim.
