High Court adjourns poker dispute to June 23

The joint civil petition filed by six poker clubs concerning the legality of poker has been adjourned to June 23, 2017, Glaws reports.

A single judge bench of the Gujarat High Court headed by Justice GR Udhwani made the decision in order to give the state government more time to reply to the contentions raised by the petitioners.

The poker clubs initially filed separate petitions to the Gujarat High Court claiming police harassment after raids conducted on their poker clubs. The petitions however were withdrawn and relaunched as a civil petition after a letter was issued by the Ahmedabad police commissioner’s office stating that poker is a game of chance.

The clubs also pressed for an interim order from the court seeking continuation of their operations, but it is understood that the state government and police sought time to give a detailed reply on the averments made by the clubs, including on their plea for interim relief.
