Hotel occupancy rate up in August, rates dropped

Hotel room rates dropped 12.2 percent year-on-year in August, but occupancy rates rose 4.4 percent in the month, according to the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO).

Average hotel occupancy was strong, reaching 92.6 percent, up 4.4 percentage points compared to 88.2 percent in August 2015.

5-star hotels saw the highest growth in occupancy in the month, to 92.7 percent compared to 87.3 percent in 2015.

According to the MGTO, the increase in hotel occupancy rate is likely attributable to the decrease in hotel room rates, which averaged at MOP 1,250 ($156) per night, down 12.2 percent compared to a year ago.

In related news, a large number of Macau’s 5-star hotels are claiming to already have around 80 percent of their rooms reserved for the first three days of Golden Week, beginning on October 1, according to Apple Daily.

The news outlet reported that MGM Macau, Wynn and Grand Lisboa are already fully booked for the week.

Over the weekend, MGTO head Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes estimated that the number of tourists visiting the city during the coming National Day Golden Week will be similar to last year.
