IR Bill debate resumes as opposition seethes

Over the fierce protests of opposition lawmakers, deliberations on the IR Implementation Bill kicked off on Tuesday within the Cabinet Committee of the House of Councillors.

The opposition parties had united in demanding that discussions about casino legalization must be suspended at this time of national emergency, as about 200 Japanese citizens are dead or missing as a result of the massive rainstorm in western Japan.

Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Keiichi Ishii was in the committee meeting, fielding questions about Integrated Resorts.

The opposition attempt to shame the government into a different stance was characteristically waved off by the administration of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

The Diet session ends on July 22, and the government aims to enact the legislation before that date.
