Japan bans the public from race meetings

Japan’s racing authorities have barred spectators from its race meetings immediately in an attempt to curb the spread of the coronavirus, local media reports.

The authorities have also temporarily halted the sale of betting tickets and payouts on race days, and on weekdays at JRA racecourses and betting facilities - with all transactions to be conducted via telephone or internet banking.

JRA’s decision comes after similar moves were made by the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC).

It is understood that South Korea has also halted racing events altogether until at least March 8, when the situation will be reassessed.
