Japan tourism minister visits Cotai Strip

As part of his Golden Week travels abroad Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Keiichi Ishii visited two IRs in Macau for research purposes on May 3. Specifically, he was given tours of Melco’s City of Dreams and Wynn Palace in the Cotai Strip.

Ishii’s ministry will have key oversight responsibilities over Japan’s IRs, likely including the selection of the three local governments that will be granted IR licenses.

Once the Cabinet Office completes its work designing the overall regulatory framework for the IR industry, it will likely step back from active policymaking and let the soon-to-be-created Casino Management Board and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism take on the day-to-day regulatory responsibilities of the national government.
