Macau asks telco help to bury illegal gambling sites

Macau authorities have asked the help of international telecom operators to take down 237 illegal gambling sites using Macau casino brands, local media reports.

On Tuesday, Wong Sio Chak, Macau’s Secretary for Security held a press conference claiming that a number of gambling websites have been “piggybacking” on Macau casino trademarks, which have “seriously damaged” the SAR’s image as an international tourism destination.

Wong said that 130 websites have been blocked or removed so far.

The websites have reportedly used brand names such as Grand Lisboa and Venetian to attract players.

Wong said the government is also preparing new legislation designed to stop text messages being sent by illegal telecoms equipment - a method of mass marketing used by illegal operators.

This is expected to be in place next year.
