Macau breaks up massive World Cup gambling ring

Macau authorities have arrested 22 people in an illegal gambling ring that has taken about $64.5 million in wagers on the World Cup in one week, according to reports.

Police seized betting records, computers, mobile phones and cash.

They also found evidence of one bet of as much as $5.1 million, according to the South China Morning Post.

The group was composed of four Hong Kong residents, nine Malaysians and nine from the Chinese mainland.

Authorities across Asia are stepping up action against illegal sports betting during the tournament, with Hong Kong police forming a special task force and liaising with neighbouring Macau and the mainland.
