Macau casino wages rise 6.7 percent

The average monthly wage of employees in Macau’s casinos was up 6.7 percent at the end of June compared with the same time a year earlier to MOP20,160 ($2,525), excluding bonuses, according to The Census and Statistics Department Survey on Manpower Needs and Wages for the second quarter.

The average pay level for dealers in the industry was MOP17,530.

The total number of people employed in the gaming sector rose 3.5 percent to 57,550, with 25,783 of them dealers.

At the end of the second quarter of 2014, the sector had 1,529 vacancies, down by 62 year-on-year, of which vacant posts for dealers fell significantly by 319.

Besides Cantonese, 85.5 percent of the vacancies called for Mandarin language skills, while 72.1 percent asked for English.

In the second quarter of 2014, a total of 3,124 new employees were hired. The employee recruitment rate of 5.5 percent increased by 0.8 percentage points year-on-year, while the job vacancy rate decreased by 0.2 percentage points.

The survey, which also covers the Wholesale & Retail Trade; Transport, Storage & Communications; Security Activities and Public Sewage & Refuse Disposal Activities, found that 36,568 workers attended training courses in the period, with the gaming sector taking the lion’s share, putting 17,328 employees through training programs.
