Macau government establishes guidelines to stamp out illegal ads

Following a campaign last year to curb the illegal promotion of the gaming industry, local authorities have established specific guidelines for advertisers to clarify the law on marketing gambling.

The Macau Daily reported that during a presentation, Tai Kin Ip, sub-director of Macau Economic Services, said that a rise in the number of misleading and manipulative advertising will see authorities take a more hardline approach to enforcing advertising regulations.

According to the official, around 300 advertisements out of the total 316 illegal cases discovered to date were officially unauthorized by the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau, the body responsible for issuing permits to advertising agents.

Audience members at the conference raised concerns that it is unclear who sets the standards for advertising, if it is the MES or Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau.

Leng Sai Vai, the head of an association of automobile traders and workers said that some of the association’s members faced prosecution despite having been granted permission to display advertising by IACM

The MES head denied this overlap, asserting that some of the advertisements submitted for official scrutiny were “deceptive enough to have cheated the IACM authorities for the go-ahead.”
