Macau government reveals specifics of Covid-19 economic support plan

Macau Secretary for Economy and Finance Lei Wai Nong revealed some of the specific measures included in the territory’s MOP10 billion (US$1.3 billion) Covid-19 economic relief fund for businesses and individuals.

Under the scheme, eligible taxpayers will be entitled to a monthly grant of MOP5,000 for a period of three months, or MOP15,000 in total. This grant will only be made available to Macau residents, with migrant workers specifically excluded from such individual economic support.

Macau residents will also be able to register for an e-voucher with a value of MOP5,000. Such e-vouchers will be accepted by local businesses from August to December this year. There was a previous scheme allowing individuals to apply for MOP3,000 e-vouchers to be used between May and July in order to boost the local economy.

Moreover, companies and self-employed individuals will be entitled to a grant ranging from MOP15,000 to MOP200,000, depending on the number of employees hired.

Gaming firms have been excluded from these support measures, with Secretary Lei explaining, “They have had many profits since the handover, so I believe they can survive this situation. The support we announced is mainly for SMEs and local families.”
